TOPOGRAPHY â€‹

Aim: to resolve site topography.

Edge lane properties - the targeted site for development - sit on a shallow slope.

Below: section from A to A illustrating site gradient with highest and lowest points indicated. Edge lane properties are offset against the original ground line.

Highest point - 2.8m

Lowest point - 1.32m

In order to build between Edge Lane and the Essoldo - so as to allow circulation to the canal side - stepped raft foundations can be used to reduce the overall gradient of descent: this creates opportunities to design accessible circulation spaces due to gradual changes in height.

Left; a diagram illustrating how demolishing the properties on Edge lane for redevelopment as well as applying a series of stepped raft foundations to the rear of the site creates two opposing gradients within the site; an ascending gradient at street level and a descending gradient to the canal.

Above - stepped wide toe  reinforced concrete raft set against original ground line and drainage.

Advantagesdue to difficulties in site accessibility, the use of raft foundations would be appropriate as they require little excavation.
